The idea for this series came to Jen while traveling home from Maine, when Canadian wildfires were making the air difficult to breathe. The Burns family has traveled there each year for 25 years. Each painting shows a progression from optimal to deteriorating conditions within the environment. There are seven paintings in the series, one for each continent, to show this is a worldwide problem. The circles incorporated into each painting represent the Earth, and also work as a zoom lens / microscope / telescope, helping the viewer focus on moments when the environment is harmed. The circle device used in her work was inspired by artist David Driskell at a show in the Portland Museum of Art in the summer of 2021. These seven pieces are available for sale through the Donald Gallery.
